Mustafa Centre is Singapore’s only 24-hour shopping mall, located in Little India, close to Farrer Park MRT. Popular among Indian shoppers and those on a budget, Mustafa Centre is somewhat similar to America’s Wal-Mart, hidden behind its modest blue glass walls, in that they have everything you need at affordable, fixed prices.
Inside Mustafa Centre you will actually find two shopping centres. One shopping centre focuses on jewellery, household appliances, a supermarket and retail shops. The other shopping centre within Mustafa sells books, CDs, DVDs, watches, clothing, shoes, and electronics. Be forewarned, however, that not all prices are cheaper. It is important to do your homework before shopping for high-dollar items, even though brands carried include Casio, Canon, Nikon, Swatch, Phillips and HP.
Also found within is the Mustafa Department Store which offers inexpensive prices and over 15,000 goods and products. Occupying the entire second floor, the market makes up for many of the Centres other failings with a plethora of biscuits, basmati rice, aromatherapy oils, hard to find spices, fresh vegetables and poultry, tea snacks, noodles and a global chocolate selection.
You will find financial services, as well as pharmaceuticals, travel agencies and a post office.
The variety of goods available at Mustafa Centre is simply amazing but the quality is questionable. The aisles are narrow and they don’t spend money on decorating but you are likely to find whatever you need. The staff is not very friendly, nor are they knowledgeable about their products. Unfortunately, they seem to believe that all shoppers are shop-lifters and they treat you accordingly. The payment system is also a bit inconvenient as you push your way through crowded aisles, back and forth between sales people and cashiers. This is still a good place to restock all the necessities as well as find deals on fashions, fashion accessories, jewellery, souvenirs, chocolates and electronics.
Cosmetics and perfumes are a reliable good deal at Mustafa Centre with product lines that include Calvin Klein, Anna Sui, Hugo Boss, Ralph Lauren, Sally Hansen, L’Oreal and Maybelline. Flashy jewellery is in abundance and you can find fine watches with labels like Tissot, Bvlgari and Tag Heuer. If you are willing to hunt and peck, you can winnow out some fashion finds but watch for seconds and out-of-date styles which are passed off as new.
Mustafa Centre’s reputation as a bargain basement facility with everything for everyone has become tarnished in recent years. The streets surrounding Mustafa Centre are still safe, regardless of the hour, but with all the beautiful, elegant, courteous, service-oriented shopping malls in Singapore, I thing I would leave Mustafa Centre for shampoo and toothpaste shopping and that’s about it.
